Thoughtful Thursday:
Long Dry Spell
We all have our hobbies. My husband loves to fish! Sometimes, he would go out before daylight. Sometimes he would fish when the skies were overcast. Sometimes, he didn’t mind what the weather was, because he just loved to fish! He would usually send me pictures of his catch, so that I could share in his excitement. For awhile, though, he had a long dry spell. I would say, “Did you catch anything?” He would answer, “No, it’s too hot.” Another time, he would say, “It’s too windy,” or, “It’s too late in the day.” I began to tease him. I would say, “It’s too hot…it’s too cold…it’s too muddy…it’s too clear…” I was kind of merciless in exaggerating his excuses.
Then, I thought that we can sometimes be that way about going to church. We might say, “I’m too tired,” or, “I don’t like their music…it’s too boring…I don’t know anybody there…I haven’t been in ages…so-and-so hurt my feelings…”. On and on it goes.
When my husband wasn’t catching fish, he didn’t just quit fishing! He learned to adapt to the various conditions. Imagine his excitement, when he started to reel in those bass once again!
Let us be encouraged to return to the Lord’s house.
How about you? Are you too tired? Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.
Don’t like the music? Close your eyes and listen to the words that are pouring out praise for our Savior. Think of what He’s done for you.
Think it’s boring? Sit up front…bring your Bible…take notes…find one thing to glean from the sermon.
Don’t know anybody? Come fellowship…let Gods people love on you. You can become a part of the church family.
Haven’t been in ages? Now is as good a time as any! Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
So-and-so hurt your feelings? So what? How does that compare with eternal salvation? The Holy Spirit can help soothe that hurt.
I am reminded of what the psalmist said: “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1
Also, Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19
Have a great day! Let’s go fishing!
