I posted this earlier on Facebook, but I wanted to share it here, along with a scripture from the book of John: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
On this date 24 years ago, America was attacked on its own soil, when two planes hit the twin towers in New York City. Today, an entire generation wasn't even born, and doesn't know the impact of that day. I wrote this poem to recount those horrific events:
NEVER FORGET
This day began like a normal day,
In the year two thousand, one;
A memory burned within our hearts,
Before the day was done.
The sun was shining; the air was clear,
And no one even knew,
The evil plan that would take place
Before the day was through.
I recall exactly where I was;
I recall the very hour;
When I first heard the tragic news:
A plane had hit the tower!
"Oh, no!" I said. "This cannot be!
The thought is just insane!"
And then the news got even worse:
There was a second plane!
I watched, as flames engulfed the towers;
I watched as lives were lost.
I recalled that freedom isn't free,
I saw how much it cost.
And, as we watched, and heard the news,
Much to our surprise,
A third attack was taking place,
O'er Pennsylvania skies.
We listened closely, then we heard
Of the terrorist's evil goal;
But mighty heroes arose that day,
And said the words, "Let's roll!"
My heart goes out to loved ones dear,
To those who are left behind;
I'm sure the pain that was felt that day,
Will never leave their mind.
As for today, take time to pause,
And lift your prayers toward Heaven;
Pray for our nation to turn to God,
And remember Nine-Eleven.
