Thoughtful Thursday

No Such Thing as Coincidence

Have you ever suddenly thought of someone that you haven’t seen in a long time, and wondered, “Hmm…what made me think of them? Then, lo and behold, you run into them shortly thereafter, and you think, “What a coincidence!” Or, you may be talking about something, and then something on TV will mention that same thing.

I had a similar experience yesterday. In my Facebook memories, I saw where I had written a little story about how the year 2015 was, “The Year of Repair.” We had to replace several appliances that year…our refrigerator went out, our TV quit working, we had to replace both units of the heat pump, the roof started leaking, and the fuel pump went out on the car. The point of that story, was that I should have been thankful for the years that they did work.

So, when I read that yesterday, I began to think about how we sometimes take things for granted. We just automatically trust that our refrigerator will work. We can throw clothes in the washer, and just assume that it will complete the cycle without leaking. We have confidence that our home will be heated or cooled. We get in our car, and just assume that it will start, and get us where we are going.

Then, the thought struck me that we can sometimes put more  faith and trust in appliances than we put in the almighty God. We trust in the temporal, instead of the eternal. We trust in what is seen, instead of what is unseen. When I think of the creator of the universe, the giver of all good things, the savior of my soul…shouldn’t I have as much…no, MORE, faith in Him, than any earthly thing?

So, I began to pray, “Lord, help me to trust in You. You have never failed me. You are always faithful.”  I thought of the lyrics from a popular Christian song, which say, “All my life you have been faithful…all my life you have been so, so good!”

That, in itself was a good time with the Lord, but when I opened my computer, the first thing I saw was a reel that had been posted on our church website. Our praise team was singing, “I trust in God…my Savior…the One, who will never fail…” I almost got chills.

Coincidence? I don’t think so!

The Psalmist says it best:

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”  Psalm 20:7

Have a great Thursday!
